T.O., kids are happy campers

DUNCANVILLE — The first time Terrell Owens ran his own football camp fewer than 100 or so kids showed up to get a glimpse at the then recently acquired Cowboys receiver in 2006.
He was late to the camp, played catch with a few of the kids, and that was it.
It’s two years later, and his camp features nearly 200 kids as well as some of his teammates to help as coaches.
Unlike his first camp, which felt like a glorified opportunity for parents and kids to see T.O. up close, this felt a little more like an actual football camp.
In the searing heat on Duncanville High School’s football stadium turf, Owens spent several hours Wednesday afternoon working with kids on various drills.
These few days in early and mid-July are the only time he could find time to hold the camp, which is in its third year.
"I figured this would be the best time to get with the kids with football season approaching," Owens said. "After this camp, I’m going to take a little vacation and rest up and relax and get ready for training camp."
Cowboys receiver Sam Hurd and running back Marion Barber also participated as coaches at the two-day camp that ends today.
And there could not be a Terrell Owens football camp without his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, who also attended.
Owens reiterated the same "Super Bowl-or-bust" stance most of his teammates declared in the spring.
"In order to do that we’ve got to make the playoffs, and we’ll do that," he said. "After that, 1-A is win a playoff game."
While there remains a great deal of attention paid to Terry Glenn or whoever might line up opposite Owens at the other receiver slot, Owens expressed no concern.
"Hopefully management and [Glenn] get on the same page and he’ll be there for us," Owens said. "That’s why we have Sam Hurd and Miles Austin. [Cornerback] Adam Jones wants to come over and play some receiver. We have more than enough weapons. That’s not to discredit Terry — we know what he brings."
